What Is a Ductless Mini-Split?

A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that moves refrigerant between a small outdoor condenser and one or more indoor air-handling heads, with no central ductwork in between. Each indoor head conditions the room it is mounted in, so a mini-split delivers temperature control room by room instead of pushing one blended air temperature through a duct trunk. The two units connect through a slim line set - a pair of refrigerant lines, a condensate drain, and a control wire - that runs through a three-inch hole in the wall.

Because there are no ducts, a mini-split avoids the 20 to 30 percent energy loss that leaky or uninsulated duct runs cause in a typical forced-air system. That efficiency, combined with inverter-driven compressors that ramp up and down instead of cycling on and off, is why mini-splits carry some of the highest SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings on the market. For Kansas City metro homes that never had ducts, or where extending ductwork would mean tearing into finished walls and ceilings, a ductless mini-split is often the most practical path to comfortable, controllable heating and cooling.

How Mini-Splits Work: Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone

Every mini-split pairs an outdoor condenser with indoor heads. The difference between single-zone and multi-zone comes down to how many indoor heads one outdoor unit supports.

Single-zone systems use one outdoor condenser matched to one indoor head. They are the right answer for a single room or a specific problem area - a bonus room over the garage, a sunroom that bakes in the afternoon, a finished basement, or a home office that runs hot. A single-zone install is usually a one-day job.

Multi-zone systems connect one outdoor condenser to between two and eight indoor heads, each with its own thermostat and remote. One bedroom can hold 68 degrees overnight while the living area sits at 74, and each head only draws the energy that room actually needs. Multi-zone systems suit whole-home coverage in houses without ductwork, or additions and finished spaces that the existing central system cannot keep up with. Because the outdoor unit has to be matched to the combined indoor capacity at design conditions, correct sizing matters even more on multi-zone systems - an oversized condenser short-cycles and controls humidity poorly.

Why Mini-Splits Work Well in Missouri and Kansas Homes

The Kansas City metro puts real demands on a comfort system: humid summers pushing into the upper 90s, and winters that regularly drop below 20 degrees. Mini-splits are well matched to both extremes for a few reasons specific to how homes here are built.

  • Humidity control. Inverter compressors run longer at lower output, which pulls more moisture out of the air than a single-stage system that blasts cold air and shuts off. That matters in July and August when the dew point climbs.
  • No-duct retrofits. Older Blue Springs and Overland Park homes, hydronic-heat houses, and additions built onto slabs often have nowhere to run ductwork. A mini-split conditions those spaces without opening walls.
  • Zoning. Two-story homes where the upstairs never cools evenly, or finished basements that stay cold, get independent control instead of fighting one central thermostat.
  • Cold-climate heating. Modern hyper-heat mini-splits hold rated capacity down to roughly 5 degrees and keep producing heat well below zero, so a properly sized system can serve as a primary heat source through a KC metro winter.

Types of Ductless Systems We Install

Mini-splits are not one-size-fits-all. The right configuration depends on the room, the ceiling, and how visible you want the equipment to be.

  • Wall-mounted heads are the most common and most economical option. The unit mounts high on an exterior or interior wall and is simple to service and clean.
  • Ceiling cassettes recess into a dropped ceiling and sit nearly flush, distributing air in four directions. They are the discreet choice for finished rooms where a wall unit would stand out.
  • Concealed-ducted (mini-duct) units hide in an attic, soffit, or closet and deliver air through one or more small registers - a middle ground that gives the clean look of central air over a small zone without full ductwork.
  • Floor-mounted heads sit low on the wall like a radiator. They work well in finished basements, rooms with sloped ceilings, or spaces where there is no clear high-wall location.

Many multi-zone installs mix head types - a wall unit in the bedrooms, a cassette in the main living area, a floor unit in the basement - all driven by one outdoor condenser.

How to Choose the Right Mini-Split: Sizing

Sizing a mini-split is not a matter of square footage alone. We calculate the cooling and heating load for each room using its floor area, ceiling height, insulation level, window count and orientation, and solar exposure, then match indoor-head and outdoor-condenser capacity to that load. Undersizing leaves a room that never quite catches up on the hottest days; oversizing costs more up front, short-cycles, and leaves the air clammy because the system satisfies temperature before it removes enough moisture.

As a rough frame of reference for KC metro homes, a bedroom often lands in the 9,000 to 12,000 BTU range, a main living area in the 12,000 to 18,000 BTU range, and a whole-home multi-zone configuration in the 36,000 to 60,000 BTU outdoor-capacity range. Those are starting points - the load calculation at your home is what we build the quote around, not a rule of thumb.

Our Mini-Split Installation Process

Every install follows the same sequence, whether it is a single head in a sunroom or an eight-zone whole-home system:

  1. In-home assessment. We measure the rooms, evaluate line-set routing and electrical capacity, and run the load calculation.
  2. Written quote. You get equipment, labor, and any required electrical work itemized before anything is scheduled - no inline pricing surprises.
  3. Scheduling and permits. We book the install and pull the Johnson County or Jackson County permit when the work requires one.
  4. Indoor heads and line set. We mount the heads, route the refrigerant line set and condensate drain through the wall, and seal the penetrations.
  5. Outdoor unit and electrical. We set the condenser on a pad or wall bracket, run the disconnect and wiring, then evacuate and charge the refrigerant lines.
  6. Commissioning and walkthrough. We verify operation in every mode, show you remote and filter maintenance, and register the manufacturer warranty on your behalf.

Mini-Split Brands We Install

We install and service the major ductless lines: Mitsubishi Electric (hyper-heat M-Series and P-Series for the best low-temperature performance), Daikin (Fit, Atmosphera, and Aurora inverter systems with strong smart-thermostat integration), LG, Fujitsu, Samsung (WindFree models with diffused airflow), and Carrier. If you already have a mini-split from any of these brands - or an older Sanyo or Friedrich unit - we service and repair those too.

Mini-Split Installation Across the Kansas City Metro

Dragonfly installs ductless systems on both sides of the state line from our Blue Springs, MO headquarters and our Overland Park, KS satellite office. That two-office footprint keeps response routes short across the metro - from Lee's Summit and Independence on the Missouri side to Olathe, Lenexa, and Leawood on the Kansas side. Mini-Split Installation FAQs

Three common cases: additions where extending ductwork is impractical, older KC metro homes without existing ducts, and zoning problems where one or two rooms run hot or cold relative to the rest of the house. Ductless mini-splits give per-room temperature control with no duct losses.

Single-zone systems use one outdoor unit per indoor head. Multi-zone outdoor units typically support 2-8 indoor heads depending on the model. We size the outdoor unit to the combined indoor capacity at design conditions - oversizing kills efficiency on multi-zone systems.

A single-zone install is typically a one-day job. Multi-zone installs with 3-5 heads run 2-3 days. The outdoor unit needs an electrical disconnect, the line set has to be routed through the wall, and the condensate has to drain properly - shortcutting any of those creates problems down the road.

Modern cold-climate mini-splits maintain rated capacity down to about 5 F outdoor temperature and continue producing heat (at reduced output) down to -13 F. For KC metro winters, a properly-sized cold-climate mini-split can be a primary heat source. We model your specific design conditions and recommend backup electric or gas if the math says you need it.

Mitsubishi, Daikin, LG, Fujitsu, Samsung, and Carrier - the major mini-split lines. We also service all of those brands plus older Sanyo and Friedrich systems if you need a repair on an existing unit.

Cost depends on the number of zones, the head types you choose, and the electrical and line-set work your home needs, so we quote every install after an in-home load assessment rather than over the phone. Qualifying heat-pump mini-splits may also be eligible for the federal 25C tax credit per IRS guidance. Ask about our financing options when you schedule.
