Year-Round Heat Pump Care

A heat pump is the only piece of comfort equipment in most homes that works in both seasons, moving heat out of the house in July and back into it in January. That dual duty is what makes it efficient, and it is also why heat pumps need a different service schedule than a furnace-and-AC pair. Dragonfly Heating, Cooling & Plumbing repairs, installs and maintains heat pumps across the Kansas City metro from our Blue Springs, MO and Overland Park, KS offices.

Same-Day

Heat Pump Repair

Not heating, not cooling, stuck in one mode, or running the auxiliary strips constantly. Heat pump faults often sit in components an AC technician rarely touches.

  • Reversing valve and defrost board faults
  • Refrigerant leak location and repair
  • Compressor, blower and control diagnostics

Heat Pump Installation & Replacement

New and replacement heat pumps sized to the house, including dual-fuel setups that hand off to a gas furnace when outdoor temperatures drop far enough.

  • Amana, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman and Daikin
  • Load assessment before we quote
  • Financing options available

Heat Pump Maintenance

A tune-up that checks both modes, not just cooling. Annual is the minimum for a heat pump; twice a year is what we recommend given the runtime.

  • Heating and cooling mode verification
  • Defrost cycle and auxiliary heat check
  • Coil cleaning and refrigerant charge

Which Heat Pump Service Do You Need?

Heat pump symptoms read differently than furnace or AC symptoms. Here is how we triage them:

  • It cools but will not heat, or heats but will not cool.
That points at the reversing valve or its control circuit. Book a repair visit rather than waiting for the season to change.
  • The outdoor unit stays iced over.
Some ice is normal in heating mode, but ice that never clears means the defrost cycle is not running. That is a repair call before the coil takes damage.
  • It is old, or the electric bills climbed sharply.
Consider installation and replacement. Systems running constantly on auxiliary heat strips are expensive to operate, and financing is available on new equipment.
  • Everything works and you want it to keep working.
Schedule seasonal maintenance, or bundle spring and fall visits into our maintenance agreements.

What a Heat Pump Tune-Up Adds

Three components separate a heat pump tune-up from an air conditioner tune-up, and all three are winter-critical:

  • Reversing valve
The component that flips the system between heating and cooling. A sticking valve is why a heat pump gets stuck delivering the wrong season's air, and it is easiest to catch while testing both modes.
  • Defrost board
Winter frost on the outdoor coil is expected, and the defrost cycle clears it every 30 to 90 minutes. A failed board leaves the coil buried in ice and the house short on heat.
  • Auxiliary heat strips
Backup electric heat that supplements the system on the coldest days. Strips that engage too readily quietly run up the electric bill, so we verify the staging as well as the operation.
  • Why it pays off
Well-maintained heat pumps in this metro typically reach 15 to 18 years. Neglected ones often fail at 8 to 10, usually because a small airflow or refrigerant problem ran for seasons and took the compressor with it.

Heat Pump FAQs

Annual is the minimum and twice a year is ideal. A heat pump handles both heating and cooling, so it runs roughly twice as many hours per year as an AC-only or furnace-only system, and the wear shows up on that schedule. Spring and fall visits let us check each mode when you are about to depend on it.

A heat pump tune-up checks operation in both cooling and heating mode, plus three components an air conditioner does not have: the reversing valve that switches the system between modes, the defrost board that clears winter ice from the outdoor coil, and the auxiliary heat strips that supplement output on the coldest days.

Some ice during heating-mode operation is normal, and the defrost cycle clears it every 30 to 90 minutes. Thick or persistent ice that does not melt away points to a defrost control board failure, and that is worth a service call before the outdoor coil is damaged.

Well-maintained heat pumps in this metro typically reach 15 to 18 years. Neglected systems often fail at 8 to 10, usually because a small refrigerant or airflow problem was left to run for seasons and took the compressor with it.

We service Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Bryant, Goodman, Rheem, York, Daikin, Mitsubishi and Samsung. For new installations we carry Amana, Lennox, Carrier, Goodman and Daikin. If you do not know who made your heat pump, we identify it from the data plate.
